The Beacon of Hope was a human experimentation facility disguised as an orphanage owned by lessathi members used to turn normal humans into artificial mages.

Information[]

The Beacon of Hope was run by a handful of very influential lessathi at the time, such as Lord Heksol, who had deep ties with the Varathian royalty. This place took in children from all over the continent and offered them shelter and free meals, although not out of kindness but to exploit them because they had no family members left to ask about them. Through repeated experimentation, the lessathi were trying to find a way to turn regular humans into mages. Although, the methods they used had an extremely low chance of success. Because forcefully injecting magical circuits into a human body is not only a very risky procedure, but also particularly painful. Of the thousands of orphans that were detained in that institution, only a handful of them survived. Due to the lack of results on their part, the lessathi eventually stopped receiving funds for their project from the royalty, and they were forced to shut down the Beacon. Because they had no need for rejects, they dumped them in various remote jungles on other continents by using teleportation magic, with nothing to their names other than the clothes on their backs, and some knives to fend for theirselves. It happened when Kate was 12 years old.[1]

In the Beacon, the lessathi used green collars in order to keep the artificial mages' powers under control. They also did test of loyalty every now and then to make sure that prisoners don’t try to run away from their captors. If they failed, they would either be beaten senseless for breaking the rules, or they’d be killed to serve as an example for all the other orphans.[2]

One of the mission in the Beacon was to capture as many ethereal orphans as possible, in the hopes that their experiments would have a greater chance of success since ethereals is know to has natural affinity for magic. Some of the results are Diane and Jason who are both ethereals as one of their successful experiment.[3]
